LA + Acumen

Wine + Models of Impact Workshop

LA+Acumen is back and looking to bring the Los Angeles impact community together to find new ways of collaborating and creating positive social impact. We will be hosting a participatory workshop on generating social enterprises with the renowned global design strategy firm, verynice, called Models of Impact. In this event, Wine + Models of Impact, you’ll participate in a game-based experiential methodology that creates a space for spontaneous discovery in order to challenge ideas and help participants think BIG. By exploring a range of ideas in an unbiased manner, you’ll begin to understand the edges of your opportunity for impact.

The workshop will explore the following themes:

  • How can products and services contribute to the development of sustainable impact in our communities?

  • What models exist that can drive impact and social change beyond traditional grants and private donations?

  • What role does philanthropy play now that consumers are more aware of the social impact behind their consumption?

This will be an introductory event to those curious about social enterprise innovation, design thinking principles and will be a great kickstart for those interested in +Acumen’s Human-Centered Design course. Join us for an evening of ideation and libations!

Want to get more involved in LA+Acumen? You’re in luck! The steering committee is recruiting for new members. Email la@plusacumen.org for more information.

SkidRow Enterprises Launch Party

A NIGHT FOR A TRAILBLAZER

SkidRow Enterprises is a Los Angeles based apparel company founded by Evan Brisbane that aims to eliminate the stigma associated with homelessness.

Before starting the company, Evan had been chronically homeless for two years after being released from prison. Evan served 17 years of a cruel 25 year-to-life sentence under California's 3 Strike Law for writing a bad check ($600). Due to the severe nature of the sentencing the legal firm of Ivie, McNeill & Wyatt waged a legal battle to get Evan out in a landmark case.

Since gaining his freedom, Evan has risen above his circumstances and worked hard to put the pieces of his life back together.

Today, Evan works at Impact Hub Los Angeles, a community hub and co-working space located in the Arts District that is focused on helping non-profits and social enterprises succeed and thrive in our city.

Evan started SkidRow Enterprises in an effort to use business as a force of good. He hopes the company will reframe the way people see Skid Row and homelessness.

Every resident of Skid Row has a story of tragedy, triumph, perseverance and strength. By enabling people to proudly displaying the community they are from Evan hopes to instill a sense of pride in anyone who is actively working to survive and thrive.

Every purchase of SkidRow Entreprise apparel helps us get closer to the ultimate goal of providing jobs and helping people rebuild their lives.

The New Frontier: Black Women's Tech Activism

The New Frontier: Black Women's Tech Activism

Last year, Disney released Hidden Figures, a feature length film that beautifully captured the real-life herstories of black women engineers at NASA in the 1960s. In spite of facing both racial and gender discrimination, these women, embodied the American hero archetype, advocating on behalf of their people while advancing the national agenda. However, as the title of the film suggests, these women were hidden from view and their contributions to the space program were largely ignored. Today, a similar situation unfolds in tech. Black women are a major component of the tech boom and routinely use their skillsets to both develop emerging markets and create innovative solutions for public safety. Yet, like their predecessors at NASA, these women, and their work, often goes unnoticed. Join us for a panel discussion with black women technologists on tech advocacy, talent pipelines for girls and women of color, and opportunities to connect social justice and technology silos.
